[ARCHIVED] Register for Coquitlam’s City-Wide Garage Sale & Giveaway Event

Garage Sale

COQUITLAM, B.C. Aug. 18, 2022 – Save money and do your part to support the environment by registering for Coquitlam’s City-Wide Garage Sale (CWGS) and Giveaway Event taking place Saturday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is a great opportunity to sell or give away household items in good condition, while contributing to environmental sustainability and community waste-reduction efforts. It’s an inexpensive way for keen shoppers to find sought-after treasures and bargains, as well as keeping items that need a new home out of the landfill.

How to Register

Registration is open, Monday, Aug. 22 – Sunday, Sept. 11. Coquitlam residents can choose to participate on one or both dates, and to sell or giveaway items.

This event is open to single-family and duplex homes, as well as multi-family homes who confirm the property owner, property manager or Strata has approved. Residents have until Sunday, Sept. 11 to register either online or in person:

  • Register online at www.coquitlam.ca/garagesale, or
  • Pick up a registration package from the Engineering & Public Works Department on the Ground Floor at Coquitlam City Hall (3000 Guildford Way) between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

After registering, residents will receive an event package with helpful tips for hosting their event, along with info on where to donate, give away or recycle their remaining items after the event.

Online registration and all details available at www.coquitlam.ca/garagesale

City Promotions at No Cost to Participants

The City will advertise a listing of all the garage sale and giveaway participant addresses in the local paper at no cost to registered participants, as well as provide an online map tool to make it easier for interested shoppers to find participating homes at www.coquitlam.ca/garagesale

Minimize Waste

The City-Wide Garage Sale & Giveaway Event meets the City's Waste Management goals in its Environmental Sustainability Plan: minimize waste generation, maximize reuse, recycling and material recovery and ensure adequate disposal opportunities exist to discourage illegal dumping and littering.

The City expanded the event to a full weekend in recent years, and now includes a giveaway component to help residents sell and give away unwanted but still usable household and personal items, preventing them from going to the landfill.

Since 2014, the successful event has seen a consistent number of registered households every year with over 1,200 registered participants in total.

Recycling Options

If residents have items remaining after the day of the event, the City recommends the following options for donation and proper disposal:

  • Check out the organizations and locations on our Guide to Donating Locally.
  • Request curbside pickup of up to four large bulky items such as furniture, white goods or mattresses with Coquitlam’s Large-item Pickup program, available to single-family and duplex residents. Residents can schedule a pickup by calling Waste Connections of Canada at 604-636-3521. www.coquitlam.ca/lipu
  • Recycle items such as books, batteries, glass containers and more at the City's Recycling Depot within Town Centre Park on Trevor Wingrove Way. Please check the City website for accepted products. www.coquitlam.ca/recycling
  • Residents can use the Waste Wizard search tool on the City website to list whatever item they need to recycle, giveaway or dispose of and to find out where and how to dispose of it correctly. www.coquitlam.ca/wastewizard.
  • Drop off items at the newly-opened (March 2022) and expanded United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre, 995 United Boulevard. The new facility features a large, full-service recycling depot for the free drop-off of recyclables including flexible plastic packaging, plastic bags, beverage containers, cardboard, books, textiles, batteries, expanded polystyrene, light fixtures, cooking oil, paint products, pesticides and gasoline, propane tanks and electronics and more. Operating on 6.2 hectares (15.5 acres) of land, the facility serves residential and commercial customers for recycling, garbage and free green waste drop-off for Coquitlam residents with proof of residency.

Coquitlam’s Environmental Sustainability Plan

Coquitlam finalized an Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) in January 2022 that will guide decisions and ensure the long-term resiliency and sustainability of the community. The ESP is organized into five themes: Climate Action, Built Environment, Waste Management, Water Management and Natural Areas, Wildlife and Habitat. The implementation plan includes a final list of 135 actions along with a Top 10 list of priorities for 2022. Learn more about the ESP at www.coquitlam.ca/enviroplan
