Capital Projects

Capital Construction Projects Schedule

Coquitlam continues to invest in core transportation and utility infrastructure to support safety, asset management and economic development. The City's Capital Construction projects support growth by improving the movement of people and goods, ensuring reliable sewer and water services and managing stormwater to protect the environment.

2024 Year in Review

The City of Coquitlam invested over $40 million into transportation and utility improvement projects in 2024, meeting the needs of the community through proactive asset replacement and investment.

The City prioritizes the proactive maintenance and replacement of our valuable assets, and our in-house capital construction team ensures seamless delivery year after year. This team provides financial efficiency through strong oversight on project delivery and finances, economies of scale across City projects, and is able to coordinate the timing of projects to minimize the impacts to the public.

Highlights

  • Sanitary sewer upgrades – More than one kilometre of sanitary sewers were upgraded in neighbourhoods across the City, including key projects in Austin Heights, along Runnel Drive, and a new forcemain to abandon an existing pipe under Hockaday Creek, helping to mitigate future environmental risks.
  • Sidewalks –Three kilometres of new sidewalks were added, including an 800-metre section along the east side of Schoolhouse Street between Foster and Como Lake avenues, helping to improve walkability and pedestrian safety.
  • Water main upgrades – 1.3 kilometres of water mains were upgraded in order to maintain the system that brings drinking water to homes. Additionally, a pressure-reducing valve was replaced in the Town Centre area to support future growth in this neighbourhood.
  • Paving – Seven kilometres of local roads, five kilometres of collector roads and 14.5 lane kilometres of arterial roads were paved to ensure vehicles can move around the community safely.
  • Dansey Avenue Frontage Works – The City updated 650 metres of Dansey Avenue bringing this neighbourhood up to modern standards, improving both safety and aesthetics with new sidewalks, curbs, landscaping and lighting.
  • Schoolhouse Street Bridge over Booth Creek – Approach slabs in the roadway and in sidewalk areas were lengthened to help protect against future settling of the roadway, safeguarding this valuable infrastructure and improving safety for all users.
  • Stormwater Treatment System – The largest treatment structure of this type in Western Canada was installed to treat stormwater in the Oakdale Neighourhood. Designed to protect Coquitlam’s watercourses from hazardous spills and stormwater pollution, it includes an oil grit separator and filtration system to support healthy waterways. This system works in conjunction with the erosion and sediment control measures that the City mandates as part of development approvals, and is already playing an important role in protecting water quality in Stoney Creek.
  • Cedar Drive Upgrade Project – Work continues on this complex multi-year project. 2024 focused on the new drainage conveyance and environmental channel in order to mitigate flooding of Cedar Drive from Partington Creek. These enhancements will increase environmental protections while enabling the infrastructure to serve existing and new development in the Partington Creek neighbourhood.
  • Phase 2 of Guildford Greenway and Road Safety Improvements – This project phase, expected to be complete at the end of April, covers Guildford Way from Johnson Street to Pinetree Way. It includes raised micro-mobility bike lanes to separate cyclists from drivers and pedestrians, as well as pedestrian signal upgrades at the Pacific Street and Guildford Way intersection and safety improvements at the Guildford Way and Pinetree Way intersection. This project received significant funding from TransLink, as well as the province and ICBC.
