Recruitment Process Timeline

Timeline 

Our typical firefighter recruitment can take up to 6 months to complete.  

A sample timeline is as follows:

  • Week 1 to Week 5 - Application Process 
  • Week 6 to Week 12 – Candidates shortlisted and invited to proceed to next phase
  • Week 15 – Second shortlisting of candidates based on results from Skills weekend
  • Week 16 – Candidate interviews scheduled
  • Week 18 to Week 20 – Interviews conducted
  • Week 21 – Final candidate shortlist and employment referencing
  • Week 22 to Week 23 – Medical evaluation
  • Week 24 – Final offers of employment extended

Schedule

Phase 1 - Applications

  • September 2, 2022 - Application Process Opens.
  • September 16, 2022 - Application Process Closes. Please refer to the below section: Required Documentation Upon Application

Phase 2 - Written Testing

  • October 15, 2022 - Fire Service Exam & Psychometric Testing. Candidates will need to be available to attending testing from 0830 to 1430. 

Phase 3 - Physical Testing Part 1

  • Early November - Coquitlam Fire Department Skills Challenge (Physical Ability Test). Candidates will be scheduled to attend testing on 1 of the 2 dates.  This testing day consists of a Smokehouse Drill, Ladder Climb, Ladder Raise, and Hydrant Evolution.

Phase 4 - Physical Testing Part 2

  • Late November/ Early December -  Physical Standards Testing at Langara College. Candidates will be scheduled to attend testing on 1 of the 4 dates. This physical testing follows the University of Alberta protocol. Suggestions for how to train for the U of A test (PDF).
  • Videos demonstrating the test components 
  • Specific info regarding the Langara testing site will be updated when available.

Phase 5 - Ride-Along Program

  • Mid December - Mid January 2023 - Ride-Along Program. Candidates will be scheduled to attend 3 consecutive shifts within the timeframe.

Phase 6 - Interviews

  • February 2023 - Panel Interviews. Candidates will be scheduled to attend an interview on one of the available dates.

Phase 7 - Background Checks

  • Late February/Early March 2023 - Employment Referencing, Police Information Check and Medical Evaluation.

Phase 8 - Offers

  • Early March 2023 - Offers of employment extended.
