Transportation Planning
Transportation planning provides a framework to coordinate future transportation systems across the city, and guide Coquitlam's transportation priorities to align with our overarching strategic goals. A Transportation Plan also ensures that mobility, access and safety are provided for all modes of transportation, and helps Coquitlam leverage funding from senior levels of government.
Updating our Transportation Plan
A lot has changed in our community since Coquitlam’s last Strategic Transportation Plan update in 2012: the Millennium Line Evergreen Extension in 2017; changes to best practices in street design; the need to remove barriers for those with disabilities; the need to address climate change mitigation and adaptation; as well as opportunities and challenges associated with emerging technologies.
An update of Coquitlam’s Transportation Plan is currently underway and includes extensive research, best practices, technical analysis and community engagement. The updated Plan will reflect the needs and priorities of Coquitlam residents, visitors and businesses, and align with other City plans such as the Environmental Sustainability Plan, Economic Development Strategy, Climate Action Plan and the Accessibility and Inclusion Plan. It will also be supported by additional strategies developed in parallel, the Road Safety Program and E-Mobility Strategy.
Staff have completed the Preparing, Discovering and Visioning phases of the Transportation Plan update, and we are currently in the Planning phase, which focuses on policy development.
The Transportation Plan’s 2050 goals include:
- Increasing sustainable transportation trips (active transportation and public transit) to 50%;
- Achieving zero transportation Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions; and
- Eliminating serious traffic injuries and fatalities (‘Vision Zero’).
Key areas within the upcoming Transportation Plan include:
- Transportation Plan: Walking Network, Projects and Priorities - aims to support pedestrian safety and access through safe and connected infrastructure for people walking
- Micromobility Network - aims to provide more safe and convenient travel options and links to regional routes for people using bikes, scooters and their electrified forms
- Street Network – aims to provide safe, reliable and efficient street networks that work together to help manage congestion in a growing community
Coquitlam's current Strategic Transportation Plan was adopted by Council in February 2012, consisting of five discussion papers and it has served as a "road map" for Coquitlam’s transportation system since that time.

The 2022 Coquitlam Household Travel Survey indicated that 22% of all trips by Coquitlam residents were made by sustainable transportation modes (walking, micromobility and transit) with remaining trips still mostly made by vehicles. This data helps ensure that Coquitlam’s transportation priorities focus on managing congestion on the existing street network, and improving transportation choices to support the Transportation Plan’s 2050 goals.
