Coquitlam's committment to engage the community and stakeholders in the planning process has helped to ensure the centre reflects the current and future needs of the surrounding neighbourhood.
A community survey in fall 2019 was the beginning of the community centre planning process. Additional visioning and community consultation took place in 2020 to refine the concept. A summary of that feedback is available in the Northeast Community Centre What We Heard infographic (PDF).
In total, the City heard from more than 1,000 people during public engagement in 2019 to 2020, including 13 community groups and three interpreted sessions in Mandarin, Korean and Farsi.
We acknowledge that these lands are traditional and ancestral lands of kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation. Ongoing staff discussions are also taking place with the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation.
A second round of public engagement took place in late 2019 and early 2020 seeking feedback on the proposed site-fit (a facility’s layout on the property) and program. Here's What We Heard in Phase 2 (PDF).
Staff considered this feedback can be incorporated into the community centre design, along with feasibility and cost implications.
